The Life of Pie

It’s that time of year when we reflect on what we’re thankful for, and I certainly have a lot to be thankful for this year: I wasn’t summoned for jury duty, the girl whose car I rear-ended never reported it, and I found these amazing Yves St. Laurent wedges at a thrift store for $12. And something I saw today made me realize two other things I am grateful for.

I pass a movie theater every day on the way to work, and because it’s Wednesday, a few new movie titles had been added to the marquee. One such title was Life of Pie.

This made me realize how grateful I am for timely typos. How awesome is it that Pi was mistakenly expressed as Pie the day before the year’s biggest pie day.

(Anyone going to see Beaking Dawn?)

It also made me grateful for pie. I love pumpkin pie so much that I refrain from eating it all year just so it can be special at Thanksgiving. I can’t wait until tomorrow. Thank you, pie.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! I am also grateful for you!

Both pie and pi are something to be thankful for. I would laugh so hard if I saw someone confuse the two.

Hi, Jenny. How was that pumpkin pie? I'm thankful for it, too. My wife doesn't care for it, which means so much more for me. *grins* In fact, I will be having some more here shortly, topped with a mound of whipped cream. Of course, I'll have to quickly jump back onto that treadmill...

Fortunately, pi or pie do not sound so offensive in English. Try saying 'pi' in Indian, and you might not so enjoy your pie. Between pi and pie in English, of course pie wins, ergo pie on the marquee.

oops, should I have said '...pi or pie does not sound...' instead? Ah, damn the grammar! Who needs it anyway, when you want to write howsoever you feel (free) to. Grammar should be liberating and not a darn shackle to the spirit!

speaking of food -- on the menu board at one of the cafes on campus, a tasty item is offered known as potato and leak soup. The irony? The cafe is across from the English department. My (and your) job gets more difficult every day. (~sigh~)
