Sometimes, I wish I were a guy. It’s not because as a woman I still only make 87% of what a man makes. And it has nothing to do with the peeing while standing up thing. (I’m lazy; I’ll sit whenever I can.) It’s because if I were a guy I’d have my whole English professor look down. I’d totally go for the tweed jacket, scruffy beard, unkempt hair look. Kind of like the guy on the left I found on thesartorialist.com.I feel like he and I could discuss psychoanalytical interpretations of Hamlet all day long in his Norton Anthology-strewn office.
There’s no such romanticized look for female teachers, is there? Sure, there’s the pencil skirt and the bun, but it comes off as more uptight than intellectual.
So in a quest for my English teacher look, I extensively studied my options, and here’s what I found.

That guy looks like an extra for a movie. Do real people dress like that?
I was leaning towards the Michelle Pfeiffer look - the jeans and jacket look mighty comfortable, and she was rockin' the big earrings.
But Maggie Smith, in the crooked tip witch's hat - if I was teaching a class, I would wear one of those bad girls every day. Goes with the jeans and jacket. Goes with the crisp red suit. Goes with the prim black dress with the white collar Tina Fey's wearing.
Now I am wondering where I can find one, and if I could get away wearing one to work every day.
Go for McGonagall...definitely. Although I would wear Tina Fey's outfit.
Ha! Some of my students would probably point to the second to the last one as me, but too much black ages my face.
Since I don't have legs like Cameron Diaz and I can't stand those earrings Michelle Pfeiffer is wearing, I'm all for the Maggie Smith look. At least, the students will know what they're getting before we even begin.

Personally I think I'm going to have to suggest cross dressing. I think in these times it's perfectly acceptable for a woman to wear a suit, it makes you look pretty smart too. If you insist on a skirt then I don't advise sitting on your desk.
I like the first look. Its more like my style. The hair and top. And that pink stuff.
I think I'd recommend going retro...mid-70's punk rock retro!
Head into class with the thin wrap-around sunglasses and a shocking pink mohawk, with lots of leather!
THAT will make them stand on their desks!
I say you should still strive for the tweed blazer and beard. Of course, you would have take some hormones or wait until menopause, but I think it would totally be worth it.
One of my English professors wore a tweed jacket, button-down shirt and tie with jeans and tan, steel-toe construction boots. Every day. No matter the temperature. And he road a scooter.
*rode a scooter. Thought "road" was rather punny.
I vote Cameron Diaz's outfit, but with McGonagall's hat and facial expression.
Dare to be McGonagall and don't forget your magic wand. It might quickly dispell the gramatical errors!

When you mentioned the bun, the image that came to mind was Miss Trunchbull from Matilda.
I think the red one looks smart, or maybe the first picture, a kind of geeky look with the glasses as well. But why do glasses have to be geeky anyway?
With an evil smile and a twinkle in my eye, I'd say go for McGonnagal's look, but on a more serious note, the red suit looks pretty hot too.
Yeah... All of them look kind of strict if you ask me.
And Professor McGonagall didn't teach English. :P

As to your question. My favorite teacher look was the one with the dark long hair. You know, the one on the right with the header: ABOUT ME over the top of it.

Go for the sexy teacher look please, start with hair buttoned up and glasses on, then take off the glasses and shake out hair to get everyone's attention.
